Oreodonts were prehistoric, hoofed mammals that lived in North America between about 40 to 5 million years ago (from the Eocene to Miocene epochs). Despite their pig-like appearance, they were more closely related to camels. Oreodont fossils are commonly found in the Badlands of South Dakota and Nebraska, often beautifully preserved. These herbivorous animals had short legs, blunt snouts, and complex teeth adapted for grinding vegetation. Their fossils provide valuable insight into the ancient ecosystems of the Great Plains and are prized for their distinctive skulls and excellent fossilization.
