Fossilized Sand Dollar
A sand dollar fossil is the preserved remnant of an ancient sea urchin that once lived on sandy ocean floors. These flat, disk-shaped fossils are typically composed of calcium carbonate and display a distinctive five-pointed star or petal pattern on their surface — the imprint of the animal’s internal structure. Over millions of years, the sand dollar’s shell (called a test) was buried in sediment and gradually mineralized, turning into stone.
Collectors value sand dollar fossils for their delicate symmetry and natural beauty, often using them in displays or jewelry. They serve as a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric marine ecosystems, showcasing the evolution and artistry of ancient ocean life.
