Pyritized ammonites are fossils where the original shell of an ammonite, a prehistoric marine mollusk, has been replaced by the mineral pyrite, also known as "fool's gold". This transformation occurs through a process called pyritization, which involves rapid burial in low-oxygen sediments rich in iron and sulfur, along with the help of sulfate-reducing bacteria. The process results in a shimmering, golden-colored fossil that can preserve intricate details of the original shell. fossils where the original shell of an ammonite, a prehistoric marine mollusk, has been replaced by the mineral pyrite, also known as "fool's gold"
