Fern Plant Leaf Fossil

Alethopteris is an extinct genus of seed fern that flourished during the Pennsylvanian Period of the Late Carboniferous, roughly 300 million years ago. Despite its fern-like appearance, Alethopteris reproduced using seeds rather than spores and belonged to an ancient group of plants known as the Medullosaceae.

Fossils from Pennsylvania often preserve the plant’s distinctive elongated leaflets and prominent central veins in fine detail. These plants formed part of the lush, swampy forests that covered the region during the Carboniferous and contributed to Pennsylvania’s extensive coal deposits.
