Madagascar is renown for producing beautifully preserved ammonite fossils from both the Jurassic and the Cretaceous periods. Many of them have been agatized, and the inner chambers are often preserved as hollow cavities lined with crystals. Ammonites were predatory mollusks that resembled a squid with a shell. These cephalopods had eyes, tentacles, and spiral shells. They are more closely related to a living octopus, though the shells resemble that of a nautilus. Ammonite fossils came in a range of sizes, from tiny species only a couple of centimeters across, to large ones reaching over two meters in diameter.
